PADI vs SSI: which should you choose?

Neither is better for a new diver: PADI and SSI Open Water courses teach the same core skills to the same international standard (ISO 24801-2), both certify you to 18 m, both cards are accepted by dive centers worldwide, and you can switch agency at any later level. Choose the course that fits your schedule and learning style, and the instructor you trust. Mohamed teaches both in Dahab.

The short answer

For recreational diving the agency on your card matters far less than the quality of your instructor and how many dives you actually do. Both PADI and SSI follow the standards of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council (WRSTC), use the same diver medical questionnaire and have the same depth limits at each level.

Pick PADI if you want the best-known brand or plan to follow a PADI pathway to professional level. Pick SSI if you like an app-based course with your digital materials, logbook and card in one place. If you are unsure, ask which one fits your dates: the in-water training in Dahab is practically the same.

Who PADI and SSI are

PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, was founded in 1966 in the United States and is the largest training agency. It says it has issued around 30 million certifications and works with more than 6,600 dive centers and resorts.

SSI, Scuba Schools International, was founded in 1970. It is now based in Wendelstein, Germany, and has been owned since 2014 by HEAD, the group that also owns Mares diving equipment. SSI reports more than 4,000 training centers in over 150 countries.

One structural difference: SSI instructors teach through SSI dive centers, while PADI also registers independent instructors. For you as a student the result is the same, because your training and card come through a registered center either way.

Are PADI and SSI cards interchangeable?

Yes, for everyday diving. A PADI Open Water card lets you join guided dives, rent gear and get tank fills at an SSI center, and the reverse is also true. Neither card expires.

You can also continue with the other agency. A PADI Open Water certification meets the prerequisite for SSI Advanced Open Water, and an SSI Open Water card meets the prerequisite for PADI Advanced Open Water, so you never repeat a course just to change logo.

💬 Ask which card suits you

PADI vs SSI at a glance

Learning platform: PADI uses PADI eLearning, online or in the PADI App. SSI uses the MySSI app, which also holds your digital logbook and certification card.

Open Water structure: both have theory, confined-water skill sessions and four open water dives, the first two to 12 m and the last two to 18 m. SSI suggests 16–32 hours of training; PADI says as little as 2–4 days plus 5–10 hours of eLearning. In Dahab both usually take 3–4 days.

Minimum age: 10 for Open Water with both agencies, 12 for Advanced.

Cost in Dahab: the difference between agencies is small compared with what is included, such as digital materials, the certification fee, gear and park fees. Ask for an exact price for your dates and compare like for like.

Open Water: PADI vs SSI side by side

Both courses make you an autonomous diver under ISO 24801-2: you can dive with a buddy to 18 m without a professional, in conditions similar to your training. Divers aged 10–11 are limited to 12 m with both agencies.

You practise the same skills: mask clearing and removal, regulator recovery, sharing air, controlled ascents and buoyancy. The main day-to-day difference is the app you study on and how your card is issued. In Dahab the skills sessions take place in the sheltered bay at Lighthouse with either agency.

Advanced: PADI AOW vs SSI Advanced Open Water

In October 2025 SSI replaced its Advanced Adventurer program with Advanced Open Water Diver. The two Advanced courses are now very close: five adventure dives, with Deep and Navigation required for both, three electives of your choice and a 30 m limit for adults (21 m for ages 12–14).

In Dahab the deep dive is usually The Bells or the Canyon, so you use your new limit straight away. Watch one naming trap: until 2025, SSI used the name Advanced Open Water for a recognition rating based on specialties and logged dives. That rating is now called Advanced Specialty Diver.

Refreshers: ReActivate vs Scuba Skills Update

Both are short skills reviews for certified divers who have been out of the water, not new certifications. PADI ReActivate combines an eLearning review with an in-water session and gives you a replacement card showing your ReActivated date. SSI Scuba Skills Update is a confined-water session no deeper than 5 m, with an optional online review.

Either one works with any recognised Open Water card. Many divers do one at Lighthouse on day one in Dahab before the Blue Hole or the Canyon.

Which I recommend, and when

Already started with one agency? Stay with it unless there is a reason to change, so your records and specialty credits sit in one place. Thinking of going professional? Look at where you want to work, then pick the agency that is common there.

Starting from zero on holiday? Choose by schedule and learning style. Some students prefer PADI eLearning on a laptop; others like having everything in the MySSI app on their phone. A first try dive also counts towards the Open Water course of the same agency, so decide before you start if you can.

Questions

Is PADI or SSI better?

Neither is better for recreational diving. Both follow the same international standards, have the same depth limits and are accepted worldwide. The instructor matters more than the agency.

Is SSI recognised by PADI?

Yes. PADI centers accept SSI cards for guided dives, and an SSI Open Water certification meets the prerequisite for PADI Advanced Open Water. The reverse is also true.

Can I do PADI Open Water and then SSI Advanced?

Yes. A PADI Open Water card qualifies you for SSI Advanced Open Water, and you do not repeat anything.

Is PADI or SSI Open Water harder?

No. Both teach the same core skills to ISO 24801-2 with four open water dives and an 18 m limit. Difficulty depends on you and your instructor, not the agency.

Is SSI Advanced Adventurer the same as Advanced Open Water?

Since October 2025 SSI calls it Advanced Open Water Diver. It is five adventure dives with Deep and Navigation required, very similar to PADI Advanced Open Water.

Do PADI and SSI certifications expire?

No. Both are for life. After a long break a refresher, PADI ReActivate or SSI Scuba Skills Update, is recommended.

Is PADI or SSI cheaper?

Prices depend far more on the dive center and what is included than on the agency. Ask for an exact price for your dates and check what both quotes include.
