Napoleon Reef dive guide: what to expect
Napoleon Reef Dahab lies off the southern tip of the Laguna peninsula, roughly 5 km south of the town centre and just south of The Islands. It is named after the Napoleon wrasse that patrol the reef, and it is a regular stop on Dahab's snorkelling boat trips. A few dive centres list it as a dive site too, so it is a nice change if you have already done the main town and Laguna sites.
Getting there is the main thing to plan. Most visitors come by boat, which drops people at the tip of the reef. You can also enter from Laguna Beach, but the reef tip is more than 500 m away, and you should not try that swim when there is any current. There is no restaurant or lifeguard on the beach, so bring what you need.
Diving Napoleon Reef Dahab is a mostly shallow affair. The reef crest comes close to the surface, with intermediate coral plateaus at 3–4 m and a sheltered inner side where the coral drops to about 10 m at its base. About 450 m south of the beach there is a detached coral massif topping out at around 5 m. The outer side of the reef faces the open sea and drops away into deeper water, where larger open-water fish sometimes pass, but it should only be explored when the sea is calm.
The hard coral is in good condition, especially on the plateaus, and the fish life is classic Red Sea. Look for Napoleon wrasse, schools of surgeonfish, snappers, emperor angelfish, raccoon butterflyfish, parrotfish, masked puffers, clownfish and clouds of anthias. Giant morays live in the reef, bluespotted ribbontail rays rest on the sand, and eagle rays and the odd turtle have been reported.
Published dive information on depths and routes here is limited, and centres disagree on the level, mainly because moderate currents can appear even in good weather. We plan it as a relaxed reef dive within 18 m on calm days and pick another site if the current is running.
