Eel Garden dive guide: what to expect

Eel Garden Dahab sits just north of the Lighthouse, at the top end of the Assala area, only a few minutes from the town centre. You can even walk there along the beach from the Lighthouse. It is part of the reef stretch locals call the Gardens, and it gets its name from the huge colony of garden eels that live in the sand on its outer slope.

Getting in is half the fun. You cross a wide, shallow reef table, either walking carefully or snorkelling over it, then drop into a narrow lagoon that cuts through the reef. The lagoon is colourful in its own right, with corals, lionfish and, in some seasons, glassfish sheltering in the walls. Because the reef table is so shallow, diving Eel Garden Dahab works best at high tide and on calm days. When the north wind is strong, the current and chop can make it impossible, so we pick our days for it.

Out through the lagoon, a bright white sand slope runs down into deep blue water, a view one local operator compares to a ski piste. This is eel country. Hundreds of slim garden eels rise out of their burrows and sway in the water, pulling back into the sand as soon as a diver gets close. The trick is to swim slowly, stay low and keep your distance, so the whole field stays up around you. You will also find longhorn cowfish, blue-spotted rays and sand dwellers on the slope, with seagrass patches and pinnacles along the edge.

The best part of the colony is often in the shallows at the end of the dive. After following the slope and rising back along the reef, many guides use the shallow eel area for the safety stop, so you can spend five relaxed minutes watching them. Most of the dive stays between about 5 and 18 m, which means long bottom times and lots of light, ideal for underwater photography.

Eel Garden is a good choice for relaxed divers of most levels, as long as you are comfortable with the shallow lagoon entry.

The dive, step by step

  1. Entry

Cross the reef table from the beach (5 minutes on foot or by snorkel) at high tide and drop into the narrow lagoon at 2–4 m.

  2. Through the lagoon

Follow the lagoon out through the reef, looking for lionfish and glassfish in the coral walls.

  3. Sand slope

Exit onto the white sand slope and descend gently to around 15–18 m, keeping low and slow so the garden eels stay out.

  4. Back along the reef

Turn and follow the reef as it rises, past pinnacles and seagrass, watching for cowfish and blue-spotted rays.

  5. Safety stop and exit

Make your safety stop over the shallow eel field at about 5 m, then swim back through the lagoon and over the reef table to shore.

Snorkeling at Eel Garden

There is easy shore access in town and a shallow reef edge, but the garden eel colony sits on sand at 10-20 m, and some locals say the stretch toward Lighthouse is not worth snorkeling.

Safety notes

  • The reef table is very shallow: enter and exit only at high tide and avoid standing on or kicking coral.
  • In windy conditions surge at the entry and current on the slope can be strong; the dive is cancelled if conditions are not right.
  • The sand slope continues into deep water, so it is easy to drift deeper while watching the eels. Keep an eye on your computer.
  • Lionfish in the lagoon: keep hands off the walls.
